Plainsmen Partnerships
Frank Phillips College has long believed that true success comes from working hand-in-glove with our communities. When institutions partner with local schools, families, and leaders, everyone wins. That spirit of partnership is on full display right now at FPC.
In a generous move that will benefit generations of Borger families, the college is gifting its Tyler Street Residential property to the Borger Independent School District. The facility, which has served as student housing for many years, will be transformed into a day care center serving the community. This is not just a transfer of property — it is a strategic investment in the families who call Borger and the Texas Panhandle home.
The new day care facility will provide much-needed, affordable, high-quality childcare to citizens of Borger and surrounding area. Working parents will have a reliable place for their young children while they pursue jobs, education, or training. Local businesses will benefit from a more stable workforce as parents will not have to choose between jobs and their children. With some minor remodeling and modifications, the Borger ISD will gain a modern, environmentally friendly space ready for little learners, complete with the infrastructure already in place for safe, comfortable care. This property donation strengthens the entire community by supporting early childhood development, easing financial burdens on families, and showing that education starts with caring for our youngest residents.
At the same time, Frank Phillips College continues to break new ground in athletics. The college is launching men’s and women’s wrestling programs that will begin competition in the 2026-2027 season. This will make FPC the first and only junior college in the entire state of Texas to offer wrestling. According to the Texas High School Wrestling Association almost 500 Texas high schools have wrestling programs with over 24,000 wrestlers. With assistance from Borger ISD Head Wrestling Coach Mario Vasquez, the FPC Plainsmen athletic staff have already seen exceptionally strong interest from high school wrestlers from Texas and nationally who want to continue their careers at the next level, many without leaving the Texas Panhandle. The program will give local athletes a chance to compete at the NJCAA level, earn scholarships, and earn college credits — all while wearing the Plainsmen uniform.
These two initiatives — the gift of Tyler Street and the launch of Plainsmen wrestling — show what partnerships look like in action. One meets the immediate needs of families and children. The other opens doors for talented young athletes and brings new energy to our campus. Both reflect the commitment of the college to the Borger community and the entire region served by FPC.
Frank Phillips College exists to improve the lives of the people of the Texas Panhandle. By providing the Borger ISD a facility for childcare services and by pioneering junior college wrestling in Texas, FPC is doing exactly that. Every child who finds care at the new center and every wrestler who steps onto the mat will carry the Plainsmen spirit forward.
