Rodeo News - added 11/28/2016

Premier Recruiting by FPC Rodeo Athlete Bobbi York

As rodeo athletes we are pushed to create our own best. Especially in rodeo, the athlete has to choose how hard they are going to work in order to become the best they can be. At Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas, student athletes are pushed to define their own best and set goals for themselves. Located in the Texas panhandle, Borger is the largest city in Hutchinson County and is conveniently located 50 miles northeast of Amarillo. The FPC Rodeo program is continually improving under the three year coach Kaylee Moyer. Moyer is a Colorado native who has multiple College National Finals Rodeo qualifications and various titles including Central Plains Region champion in multiple events, 2012 CNFR Reserve All Around Champion, and the 2015 Spicer Gripp Women’s Breakaway Champion. As a coach, Moyer focuses on building a team that is talented but also strong in character. “While I do want to win in the arena, it’s my upmost priority that we outshine in the area of character.” At FPC, Moyer encourages athletes to make goals that will help drive them to where they want to go. One unique thing about FPC is how both timed events as well as rough stock events are represented through the coaches. Coach Josh Griggs, an FPC alumni and 2012 and 2015 CNFR contestant, is a major asset with bull riding, bareback riding, and saddle bronc riding. Coach Griggs is currently competing in professional rodeos as well as the PBR. The practice schedule at FPC allows the ropers to rope everyday with either fresh jersey and beef calves for calf ropers and corriente steers for the team ropers. Bulldoggers can practice 2 to more times a week with various outside coaching as well as steers at the school. Roughstock riders are able to buck out bulls 2-3 times a week where saddle bronc and bareback riders are able to spur out horses at least once a week. FPC has various training machines that are always available to the athletes include a Mighty Bucky/Broncy, drop barrel, Time Machine, Heel-O-Matic, Tuf-Calf and a UTV used for pulling roping dummies. Goat tyers practice every day varying between groundwork and horse work while having access to the goat pen whenever. FPC rodeo has goat tying jackpots weekly and attends various jackpots in Texas and Oklahoma throughout the semester. When hauling to jackpots and rodeos, FPC school rig will haul athletes while paying for the fuel. Following the motto of FPC start here go anywhere, it is rather cost effective to attend Frank Phillips. For an out of state student taking 12 credit hours the cost is $1634.00 in tuition. Academic Scholarships are available and everyone is encouraged to apply! The Foundation Scholarship deadline is April 15th and is as easy as going to our website (www.fpctx.edu) and clicking on “Apply for Scholarship option. As far as a rodeo scholarship, it is requested for each athlete to send Coach Moyer or Coach Griggs a rodeo resume, a 2-3 minute highlight video, and a short statement as to why the athlete wants to become a part of the FPC Rodeo Program. Returning sophomore Erica Henderson from Hyannis, Nebraska, returned to Frank Phillips because of the amount of structured practice and the motivational environment that is still pushing her to be the best athlete in and outside of the arena.
